At Paronella Park, Mena Creek, Tropical North Queensland, the dream continues. The Park was developed in the 1920s and 1930s by Spanish immigrant Jose Paronella, an early eco-tourism operator. Visitors are amazed to find amongst the many buildings, North Queensland's first privately owned hydro electric system and fountains fed by the 60 feet Mena Creek Falls. Jose also planted 7000 trees enabling the inclusion of a self guided botanical tour into the visitor experience. After successfully operating until his death in 1948, the Park was lost for 45 years. It was rediscovered in 1993. In 2009, restoration was completed on the original hydro electric system. Today, Paronella Park is once again powered entirely by the flow of Mena Creek Falls. The experience includes the story of Jose Paronella's dream (day tour - 45 minutes) and the evening experience (the night light-up and tour - one hour). Entry is valid for 12 months and also includes one night in the camping and caravan park. Paronella Park is impossible to describe; you arrive not knowing what to expect and depart having experienced a unique piece of Australia.
