Barron Gorge is the traditional home of the Djabaguy people who have many special connections to this place. The Douglas and Smiths tracks, traditional pathways for the Djabaguy for thousands of years, became the first pack routes linking the hinterland goldfields to the coast in 1876. This 8.25 kilometre one-way walk includes a variety of natural and historical features. Beginning at the Speewah Conservation Park both the Douglas and Smiths tracks follow the 765 metre Djina-Wu track before they diverge. The Smiths track winds through rainforest and drops down to cross Stoney Creek before climbing to a ridge, with drier forest and views of Barron Gorge. From Tobys Lookout the track climbs through open forest before beginning a long and very steep descent to the trailhead at Kamerunga. A linking track, Gandal wandun, joins the Smiths and Douglas tracks, allowing walkers to follow a less strenuous circuit and return to their starting point at Speewah Conservation Park.
