FROM THE CEO'S DESK

It’s almost September and that means it’s celebration season here in Tropical North Queensland. It’s an exciting time of year for our tourism industry as we hit our busiest period for visitors and we’re also welcoming all the fun and festivities of Festival Cairns which got off to a great start last weekend. While we commiserate with those affected by the equine flu scare we are hopeful that there will still be plenty of celebrations at the spectacular Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival which so many locals and visitors are looking forward to and which contributes so much to our regional economy.

TTNQ was proud to provide a preview of the Planet Safe Partnership program this week and to welcome Cairns City Council as the first PSP member. You can read more about this important new initiative below.

Thanks again to the many TTNQ members who have already completed their membership renewal for 2007-2008. Your support is invaluable in our efforts to grow sustainable tourism in Tropical North Queensland. If you haven’t managed to return your forms and payment to TTNQ please note that the closing date is this Friday 31 August.

With Australian Airlines officially ceasing operation from this Saturday I once again acknowledge their commitment to Cairns and Tropical North Queensland particularly that of their many staff based here in Cairns. The company made an enormous contribution to the regional economy by providing jobs and direct flights linking us directly with our biggest international market, Japan.

It is good to see so many people are supporting the excellent efforts of Couch to raise funds for a much needed cancer treatment facility in Cairns. You can help too by participating in the two events listed below in our IMPORTANT UPCOMING EVENTS section and I urge you to do so if you are able.

I am out of the office and overseas from now until 8 October. Director of Strategy and New Markets David Rose will be Acting Chief Executive Officer in my absence and both he and our Chairman Stephen Olle are available during that time should you wish to discuss anything.

NZ RTO ROADSHOW
TTNQ participated in the New Zealand RTO Roadshow from 6 - 14 August with the four other RTOs. TTNQ gave 10 minute power point presentation on the destination to a total of 230 travel agents, made approximately 100 sales calls throughout the North and South Islands and attended a meeting with wholesalers, airlines and retail travel agencies. The most popular spots are still Cairns and Port Douglas with growing interest in Islands, Spas and the Gulf Savannah. There are challenges in the NZ market, including the fact that only 40% of NZ consumers are using travel agents for holiday bookings. Discussions were held on whether trade or consumer shows would be most productive.

In all, more than 2000 Korean visitors travelled to Tropical North Queensland in the month from 27 July to 20 August, giving the eight flights an average load factor of just under 90 per cent. On Monday 27 August, TQ and TTNQ's Emerging Markets team hosted a debrief meeting for industry operators who had participated in the charters program to discuss lessons learned and suggest improvements for the proposed 2008 series.
