Stop the Presses - The Latest News - Welcome New Members |
FROM THE CEO's DESK
Dear Members,
Over recent months the Board of Tourism Tropical North Queensland has reviewed how best to communicate the range of activities undertaken by the organisation - and the results generated - to our members.
The Board has approved a new engagement and communication strategy. This began in August with the Business and Marketing Plan Forum and Marketing Round Tables which proved extremely successful and was very well attended. Similar forums will be held twice a year (August and March) and in future will have the participation of Tourism Australia and Tourism Queensland special market representatives. These forums will be called TNQ Market Updates and Round Table Discussions and will be open to all members.
We will also conduct two Insight Forums per annum (May and November) featuring special representation from industry.
JCU, Tourism Australia and Tourism Queensland will address specific research issues at the Insight Forums and give targeted presentations on specific market intelligence as required. There will also be two presentations per annum in each of our major LTO precincts.
The current structure of the TAG groups will be discontinued as a consequence of our new strategy.
A number of strategic panels will also be established to focus on Specialist markets and will have a more strategic focus to address key market issues and provide valuable feedback to the Board. Strategic Panels will be by invitation of the Board, limited in size and open to members that have a specialist working involvement and demonstrated knowledge of the particular market.
The new strategic panel structure will commence this month.
I thank all members for their ongoing support and hope that this new and enhanced communications strategy along with use of our TTNQ members’ web-site will provide all members the opportunity of gaining valuable insight into the destination marketing activities of TTNQ. I also encourage high-level engagement with the key TTNQ specialist staff operating in each of your key markets.

Crocodile TrophyYou’ve probably been reading about the Crocodile Trophy in the Sports section of the Cairns Post. Over 160 cyclists and crew participated the most challenging mountain bike race in the world, riding 1300km over 10 days, much of it on unsealed roads. In addition to the local media coverage, SBS sent TV images around the world. Cyclists crossed the finish line at Cape Tribulation last Thursday and enjoyed a post race function at Cape Tribulation Resort and Spa before heading for Ferntree Rainforest Lodge for the night. As well as the spectacle, the race injected more than $500,000 into the local economy. |

The Australian Rainforest Foundation will be planting the last of 3000 trees sponsored by TTNQ, PDDT and TQ on 18 November. TTNQ ran an online campaign where people could have a tree planted in the Daintree rainforest in their name. The rainforest regeneration campaign was an instant hit and the 3000 opportunities being taken up almost overnight. The nursery plants have grown sufficiently large to be able to survive on-site at Cape Tribulation. Volunteers have been busy planting and the project will be finalised with the last trees going into the soil on 18 November.

Baz Luhrmann's Movie "Australia"
TTNQ has a very special Members’ evening planned on 26 November in association with Baz Luhrmann’s film
These Volunteers kindly donate their time (generally 12 hours per week) to welcome the many visitors into our region, as well as time to educate themselves on our members products.
Our organisation considers these volunteers to be the back bone of our operation and relies on them heavily to provide a service to the tourism industry, which they do with dedication and passion.
Every year to say thanks to our volunteers we have a Christmas party and provide gift bags.
We are hoping that our members may be able to contribute to these gifts bags in the form of vouchers to experience your product or with donations of merchandise etc.
We currently have 40 volunteers and your support would be very much appreciated by TTNQ and the volunteers.
If you are able to assist please email val.shields@tnq.org.au or drop into the centre and meet some of the volunteers.
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
Simon Vaughan at Travel Cuts thanks Jana Stankovich at TTNQ for the Backpacker famil experience for his staff.
Hello Jana,
Thanks for the photo. We've already heard from David and he's still breathless with excitement...and exhaustion, I suspect. It certainly sounds as though you out did yourselves in taking good care of them. I am looking forward to speaking to them both when they're back.
We'll keep you posted with "Phil's" progress (videographer). It sounds as though they got quite a bit of footage. It should be fun.
Please do let us know about future agent famils. We would definitely be interested in sending people again if the timing is right. As for Guy and me, as long as the spare seat is very comfortable, you might even get us on board!
Thanks again for all your help and enthusiasm. I'll give the waiter your best at lunch!
Cheers,
Simon
Verandah’s restaurant in Port Douglas received this letter from a happy customer.
Hi,
Last week I stayed at Verandahs in Port Douglas for a few days with my partner.
We had a beautiful and relaxing time, so relaxing that I left my bag behind at the last cafe where we had lunch!
After returning to Cairns I noticed I missed my bag with both our wallets, phone, credit cards...the lot!
Not knowing what to do I contacted Sue at Verandahs who sent her husband up the road straight away to look for the cafe.
They were closed already but left a note on the window 'bag found'. I was so relieved that they kept my bag and everything was still inside.
A big 'Thank you' to 'Wraps on Macrossan' and Verandahs for great customer service, yes, Port Douglas is nice!
Gigi
